Washing Machine Not Spinning? How to Fix It

A washer that won't spin usually can't drain (clogged pump filter or hose), thinks the lid or door is open, or has an unbalanced load. Less often it's a worn belt or motor coupling.

Safety first

Tools

  • Towels and a shallow pan
  • Screwdrivers and nut drivers
  • Pliers
  • Flashlight

Parts

  • Lid switch, drain pump or belt matched to your washer's exact model number, only if that part tests bad

Step by step

  1. Rebalance the load

Redistribute heavy items like towels or jeans evenly and run a spin-only cycle.

  2. Check the drain

Make sure the drain hose isn't kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe.

  3. Clean the pump filter

Front-loaders: open the small door at the bottom front, drain the water with the little hose, and unscrew the filter to remove coins, socks and lint.

  4. Test the lid or door switch

Look for a broken lid strike or door latch. With the washer unplugged, test the switch for continuity with a multimeter.

  5. Inspect the belt

Top-loaders with a belt: tilt or open the back panel and check for a loose, glazed or broken belt.

  6. Run a test

Plug it back in and run a rinse and spin cycle.

When to call a pro

Call an appliance tech if the drum makes grinding noises, the tub is loose or wobbles badly, or an error code points to the motor or control board.
