How to Replace Windshield Wiper Blades

Wiper blades wear out every 6–12 months. Streaks, chatter or skipping mean it's time. The driver and passenger blades are often different lengths.

Pro would charge$30–$70

Safety first

Tools

  • Towel (to protect the windshield)
  • Tape measure, if you're unsure of the size

Parts

  • Wiper blade pair in the sizes for your year, make and model (driver and passenger), with the matching arm connector

Step by step

  1. Find your sizes

Check the owner's manual or a store lookup for your year, make and model; buy the set for driver and passenger.

  2. Lift the arm

Pull the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks upright, and put a towel on the glass.

  3. Remove the old blade

Press the release tab where the blade meets the arm hook and slide the blade down and off.

  4. Attach the new blade

Slide the new blade's adapter onto the hook until it clicks.

  5. Lower and test

Gently lower the arm, repeat on the other side, and test with washer fluid.

When to call a pro

Have a shop look if the wiper arms don't park correctly or the motor runs slowly; that's not a blade problem.
