How to Replace a Headlight Bulb
Most halogen headlight bulbs can be replaced from under the hood in minutes. Some cars need the air box or a wheel-well liner moved for access.
Safety first
- Turn off the headlights and engine; halogen bulbs get very hot.
- Never touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil creates hot spots that make it fail early.
Tools
- Gloves (clean cotton or nitrile)
- Flashlight
- Screwdriver or trim tool, if a cover is in the way
Parts
- Headlight bulb in the size for your year, make and model (e.g. H11, 9005); replace in pairs for even brightness
Step by step
Find the bulb size
Check the owner's manual or a store lookup for the low-beam and high-beam sizes.
Reach the back of the headlight
Open the hood and find the round cover or connector behind the headlight housing. Move the air box or turn the wheel for access if needed.
Unplug and remove

Labeled diagram: Unplug and remove. Tap to enlarge. Press the tab on the connector and pull it off, then twist the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn (or release the wire clip) and pull it straight out.
Install the new bulb
Holding it only by the base, insert the new bulb in the same orientation, twist it clockwise to lock, and reconnect the plug.
Test and check aim
Turn on the lights and confirm low and high beams work. Park facing a wall to check both beams are at the same height.
When to call a pro
Have a shop check it if a new bulb doesn't light (likely a fuse, relay or wiring issue) or the housing is full of water.
