How to Replace an Engine Air Filter
A clogged engine air filter can cost you power and fuel economy. Most cars need a new one every 15,000–30,000 miles, more often on dusty roads.
Safety first
- Work with the engine off and cool.
- Don't let debris fall into the open intake tube.
Tools
- Screwdriver or socket, only if the housing uses screws
- Shop vac or rag
Parts
- Engine air filter that matches your year, make, model and engine
Step by step
Find the housing
It's the black plastic box connected to the large intake tube, usually near the front of the engine.
Open it
Release the metal clips or remove the screws and lift the cover.
Swap the filter

Labeled diagram: Swap the filter. Tap to enlarge. Note which way the old filter sits, lift it out, wipe out the housing and drop in the new one the same way.
Close and check
Seat the cover evenly, fasten all clips or screws, and make sure the intake tube is still tight.
When to call a pro
Most people never need a pro for this, but have a shop look if you find oil in the air box.
